Attorney General Sotir Tsatsarov met with border guards who were the subject of an investigation in Turkey in the case of 2008 when a Turkish poacher was shot dead for violation of his maritime border. In 2009, as a result of an investigation completed, the criminal case in Bulgaria against the border police officer Mikhail Tsonkov for causing the death by negligence was dropped. In mid-June this year, the four Bulgarian border police officers were summoned before a Turkish court. "There is a real chance that justice will triumph and not allow the extradition of border guards in Turkey," said Attorney General Rumyana Arnaudova. At the meeting, Sotir Tsatsarov expressed his respect for the border police officers for the dignified performance of their duties. The heirs of the deceased Turkish citizen have lodged a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights. They claimed damages for non-pecuniary damage as a result of the death alleged by the Bulgarian authorities. "The court's decision, however, indicates that the Bulgarian state has fulfilled its obligations under the law and conducted an objective investigation. It arrived at the right legal conclusions for the absence of a crime ", said Rumyana Arnaudova and added that their claims were rejected as unfounded. Border police officer Nikolay Kostov stressed: "We are confident that our extradition will not be allowed". "We were convinced that the Bulgarian state would do what it takes, in a legal way, for the case to be settled in our favor," he said. Our border police officers must give explanations of the defense on the charge against them in Turkey
