The Goodwood Festival of Speed is completed and dusted off for another year, with a number of premieres and important debuts brightening the 25th anniversary of the event. Autonomous technology and electric motors have highlighted advanced vehicle technology, but traditional automotive engineering enthusiasts were always thrilled.
Porsche claimed the central stage at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed (FoS), where the German automaker celebrated its 70th anniversary. The installation of the lawn before this year has taken the form of an imposing six-pointed sculpture, with an iconic Porsche perched on the end of each.
And this sculpture was not the only attraction to turn heads to the skies, with David Mayman's jetpack JB11 rising on the lawn in front of Goodwood House and completing its first European flight. The FoS Future Lab, with its interactive facilities focused on space, autonomous vehicles, personal flying and robotics, has also demonstrated the direction that transport can take.
If the Future Lab gave a taste of this future, two advanced cars that went to the track offered a complete mouthful. One was I.D. Volkswagen. R Pikes Peak, fresh out of the ascension of the same name, broke the record of an electric car at Goodwood Hill Climb with a rise of 43.86 seconds, the third fastest of all cars in the world. History of the event.
The other was Robocarace Robocar, who became the first fully autonomous electric race car to successfully complete the hill climb. The vehicle leaned on the LiDAR, radar, GPS, ultrasonic sensors and cameras to navigate around bullets, flint walls and along the winding road up the hill without a human driver.
Goodwood's Silver Jubilee has hosted iconic racing cars and modern automotive wonders, with the legendary Mercedes Silver Arrows of the '30s and' 50s, clbadic Porsches and the McLaren Senna.
Notable debuts include Noble Automotive's entry-level M500, Toyota Supra's new Toyota Supra and Steve McQueen's legendary Ford Mustang Bullitt making their first appearance outside of the US and the all-new Mustang Bullitt Ford. Aston Martin also debuted a reinforced Cygnet with a V8 under the hood
