Why BMW has not managed to become European Tesla?

Electric vehicle technology was developing rapidly in the early 1990s. However, most manufacturers treat this subject superficially without showing much interest. California lawmakers are turning the process into a catalyst, stating that at least 2% of state vehicles emit no emissions.

The GM group reacts to the EV1, which fails, and launches it, but BMW Technik is much better and develops this incredible E1 electric car offering a range of 250 km. Thanks to a special charging system, the battery is recharged for 2 hours and with a standard plug, the time is raised to 6-8 hours.

Even with less efficient sodium sulphate batteries (capacity of 19.2 kW / h), the E1 capacities of the 90s surpbad those of the Bavarian BMW i3 electric car.

The first-generation (red) machine was presented in Munich in 1992. The Autocar team was invited to the presentation. British reporters reacted as follows: "The E1 offers excellent fit, good bulk, decent comfort and impressive powertrain.Although by BMW standards, it's a great car."

The Bavarians are aware that to please consumers, electric cars do not have to be heavy and boring. Therefore, the E1 is made of ultra-light materials, with all the weight falling in the wheelbase. The car weighs only 900 kg, which is remarkable.

The powertrain offers a modest 45hp. and 150 Nm, which is quite sufficient for city traffic. The main advantage is that the maximum torque is immediately available to the driver. By badogy with BMW Z1 and E1, it should be proposed in limited edition, but overall, the idea is different: this model should test the technology of the future electric model E36 of the series 3.
