The dust settled and the Pittsburgh Steelers were shocked in a 26-17 home loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. Not much went well for the Steelers on Sunday afternoon, from exploding play injuries it was a total loss for the Men of Steel. Below are the Steelers’ offense, defense and special teams playing ratings, and today’s poor performance will be a direct link to the ratings they received.
The Steelers offense stumbled out of the gate again. Slow starts plagued this team for a long time, but in 2021 the problem only got worse. Apparently, the Steelers’ offense doesn’t kick in until late in the first half. Ben Roethlisberger also limped out of the gate but ended the game within 300 yards, his only interception was a terrible decision on a game he should have just taken the sack.
Najee Harris looked pretty good, considering he hadn’t been given much in terms of race tracks. His 25-yard touchdown reception was the first of his career, and he threw up a vicious stiff arm that will be replayed on the highlights rolls for the remainder of the season. Harris is a great football player, I just hope he can find some suitable running tracks.
Tight ends and receivers were okay, you wish Chase Claypool started knocking down some of those jumps Roethlisberger threw in his way. This attack forces players to form a great playing team, but big plays just don’t happen. It is frustrating to know their potential only so that it is not reached week after week. Hopefully an escape game is on the way, but we’ve been waiting for it for a long time.
Overall rating: D +
It’s hard to blame the defense for this game considering they were down four starters from the week before, and Stephon Tuitt who is in the injured reserve. Joe Haden, Devin Bush, Tyson Alualu and TJ Watt all missed more than half of the game and their absences were notable. While they didn’t have them in the game, the rest of the Steelers defense kept things interesting.
Raiders quarterback Derek Carr tore the Steelers’ defense to shreds in the passing game by throwing over 350 yards. Carr apparently had an open catcher every play, with Hunter Renfrow slashing the defense on what appeared to be a third down. The Steelers were able to keep Darren Waller in check for most of the afternoon, but the other wide receivers more than made up for it. Henry Ruggs put the game on ice with a 61-yard pass from Carr for a dagger touchdown on the third down. This game could have made a difference in the game, and unfortunately it fell in favor of the Raiders.
The Steelers erased the Raiders’ hasty attack, however. Whether it was the Steelers’ front that made it, or the Raiders’ lack of interest in throwing the ball with Josh Jacobs out of play remains to be seen, but the fact remains, the Steelers’ defense was not slashed. on the ground.
Overall rating: C-
Quiet enough day to turn football on both sides, but Pressley Harvin III and Chris Boswell were excellent. Harvin bombarded the ball all over the field, including one that was shot down at the three-yard line. As Boswell kicked a record 56 yards down the field at Heinz Field in a high pressure scenario. The kicker and the punter did their job perfectly, now I hope they can wear it all year round.
Overall rating: B +
He just wants the Steelers day, the defense desperately needs to be healthy, and the offense needs to start figuring out what it has to do on the pitch. The Steelers aren’t going to win much or none in today’s formula, and that needs to change. The Raiders were simply the better team that day, and for the Steelers, playing home in front of fans for the first time since 2019 is shocking and should never have happened.
The Steelers also struggled at times on Sunday, taking a number of penalties including offside, grabs and false starts. These are simple penalties that can be taken out of any game by being more disciplined. Hopefully this will be the last time we have to talk about the Steelers shooting themselves in the foot this year.
Overall rating: C-
