It has been a tumultuous month for staff departures in Bungie for at least a month, and even though people seem to be leaving on good terms, fans are starting to be nervous anyway. Yesterday brought the news that two Bungie personalities were leaving the developer, Joe Blackburn, former raid leader promoted to "broader responsibilities" last November, and narrative leader Jill Scharr who worked on the well received Forsaken story. Both announced their departure ten minutes apart on Twitter at the end of the working day and had only praise for their stay in Bungie.
And yet, these two people join weapons specialist Jon Weisnewski and sandbox designer Josh Hamrick who left the company at the same time almost exactly a month ago. That's four key starts in less than 30 days, and fans are starting to wonder … if something happens.
Once again, all of these people are leaving Bungie publicly at least under seemingly favorable conditions, and it is quite possible that there is nothing evil behind all this. Many of these people have been with Bungie for years, and sometimes you just want to move on to new things.
But the timing for that, four "names" in Bungie who leave in such a short period, is not very beautiful and even less when you remember that Bungie has just completed her divorce with Activision where he has to keep the destiny the franchise to itself to go from the front. Losing four of the key people who helped destiny Becoming what he is at the moment does not seem ideal, and Bungie also loses support staff from Activision studios like Vicarious Visions, in addition to all the other resources offered by the biggest publisher (for example, I do not still have not found Bungie Contact PR again since the Activision PR team no longer exists).
Of course, the raid team is more than Joe Blackburn (who has not been part of this team for a while), and the editorial team is more than Jill Scharr. Sandbox contains many more people than Weisnewski and Hamrick. Bungie is a studio of more than 800 employees. So it's not as if all these departments disappeared with these departures.
But although Bungie is not a studio known for its horribly brutal crisis, we have obviously seen very high-profile examples of things that do not go behind the scenes, mainly in the period leading up to the release of Destiny 1 and Destiny 2. And now we are there, potentially in the perspective of Destiny 3 in the next year or two. But it will probably take another dive deep Jason Schreier type to understand what is happening here, knowing that I do not have this type of sources to tell you.
I think there is simply a general malaise among the fans in the current state of destiny. We know for sure one thing about the future of the franchise: Bungie is finalizing the content of the annual Pass announced during the Activision season with Season of Opulence. But that's all. After that, we do not know what is planned for this autumn, if Destiny 3 is really happening next year or if Bungie is moving to a broader vision, without sequelae. In short, we really do not know anything about Bungie's plans destiny now that they have come out of Activision, and the only concrete news we have make have … four personalities who have left the team in the last month.
Hopefully we'll get an idea of what's going on with both destiny and Bungie soon, because until then, fans can only marvel.
