Bungie reveals when four ‘Destiny 2’ PvP maps arrive, Rift returns

Well, I knew it was going to end up being a big month for Destiny 2 news at some point, but I didn’t expect it to be noon on a Tuesday in a tweet thread from Assistant Game Director Joe Blackburn (who for all intents and purposes seems to be the real Game Director these days).

Blackburn’s discussion thread is about the highly controversial and rarely (by Bungie) topic of PvP. Outside of a TWAB or the Witch Queen reveal on August 24, Blackburn made a bunch of news in the thread. I can’t fit everything in here, so I’ll summarize.

Season 15, which will start on August 24 and last at least 5-6 months before The Witch Queen, will disable all three spikes and make changes to Trials of Osiris. We already knew that, but apparently the testing changes will be detailed during the August 24 event.

Season 16, during The Witch Queen, will bring two Destiny 2 cards out of the content vault. I don’t know if you can see it, but I underlined 2 because these are cards that disappeared when Beyond Light hit. And maybe some that were taken out even before that. They don’t seem to have decided which cards are coming back and asking for comment. For reference, here are the cards that have been vaulted for Beyond Light:

  • Merger
  • Solitude
  • Punishment
  • The Citadel
  • The emperor’s respite
  • Equinox
  • Eternity
  • Echo of the Firebase
  • Player Ruin
  • Legion Gulch
  • Vostok

Honestly, I don’t care until it’s La Citadelle. Blackburn also went into more detail about the content vault itself, as many of the changes to Destiny 2 as a whole require hand carry cards like these, which means they can’t just press a button to bring them all back. It’s actually a fair amount of work. I guess that also applies to things like “hey, why can’t we just get the menagerie back”.

Season 17 will bring a whole new map, and it’ll be a new location that we’ve never seen before. But given the number of locations that have been or will be added, it could be anything from Europa to the Vex Network to Old Chicago (if that’s where the Witch Queen will be)

Season 18 will bring back another Destiny 1 card rework. No real clue as to what it will be.

In the course of 2022, we’ll see three new modes, one of which is definitely supposed to be Rift, which fans have requested. I think I know what one of the other two could be, but I’m going to refrain from saying anything for now.

The Destiny community seems generally grateful for the news, but understandably there is the crowd who “okay, so four new maps but only one is actually new,” given the retaliation. I mean I get it, because it was disappointing when the game just erased 11 maps via content storage, but I’m also ready to celebrate Something is happening over the next four seasons here when it comes to PvP.

There is a lot more to say, but I think Blackburn wanted to bring some light to the end of the tunnel here, although the real start of this tunnel may still be in 5-6 months, given that the maps are not hit up Witch Queen. More soon.
