On October 11, Burger King will become the first fast food chain to offer Impossible Foods vegan nuggets. The nuggets will be available in an order of eight pieces with a choice of dip only at Burger King stores in Des Moines, IA, Boston, MA and Miami, FL. The new menu item is a limited-time launch to test the meatless item with consumers.
Impossible Plant-Based Chicken Nuggets are made from a base of soybean and sunflower oil and feature a crispy breadcrumb coating and a juicy, meaty interior. Burger King has confirmed that the plant-based nuggets will be cooked in the same oil as the meat and cheese products.
“This isn’t the first time we’ve teamed up with Impossible to make waves in the industry. In 2019, we became the first quick-service restaurant to serve the award-winning plant-based Impossible patty and feature the iconic Impossible Whopper, ”said Ellie Doty, director of marketing for Burger King North America, in a statement. . “So it’s only fitting that we are the first world QSR to test the Impossible Nuggets. We’re excited to hear what our customers in test markets think about this latest innovation.
Burger King goes meatless
Burger King first partnered with Impossible Foods in 2019 to bring the Impossible Whopper. After a successful test launch, the burger has expanded to over 7,000 Burger King locations across the United States. The Pioneer Sandwich is made from a plant-based Impossible Burger and can be ordered vegan with the mayonnaise being omitted. Since its inception, the Impossible Whopper has become available in global markets, including Canada, Europe, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Last year, Burger King also tested the brand’s Impossible Sausage ahead of its retail debut. The chain featured the new Meatless article on the Impossible Croissan’wich in participating locations nationwide, making it the first nationwide chain to add Plant-Based Impossible Sausage to a breakfast sandwich. . While the Impossible Sausage galette is free from animal products, the sandwich is made with dairy cheese, chicken eggs and non-vegan croissants.
The beginnings of vegan chicken nuggets
Although Burger King is the first fast food chain to offer Impossible Foods vegan chicken nuggets, last month the nuggets debuted at around 150 restaurants and are making their way to 10,000 grocery stores, including Walmart, Kroger, ShopRite, Safeway and Gelsons (the first supermarket to sell their Impossible Burgers) by the end of the year. Other restaurants that now serve the nuggets include restaurants owned by celebrity chefs David Chang (Fuku in New York); Sean Brock (Joyland in Nashville, Tennessee); and Marcus Samuelsson (Red Rooster in New York).
The vegan nuggets were launched on the heels of competitor Beyond Meat’s Beyond Chicken Tenders, which launched at 400 restaurants in July. As the vegan chicken war continues, brands and others vie for storage and menu space for their innovative vegan meats. However, unlike the animal-based chicken wars between Popeye’s, Chick-fil-A, and KFC, the Vegan Chicken Wars is a victory for everyone from humans to animals to the environment.
