ST. GEORGE – The death of four people is confirmed in a bus accident on State Route 12 near Bryce Canyon, which blocked the highway shortly after noon on Friday. the authorities say.
The tourist bus, which carried 30 passengers in addition to the driver, was made up of Chinese nationals. The driver was described as American Chinese by the Utah Road Patrol. Authorities confirmed Friday via social media that 12 to 15 people were injured in addition to the confirmed dead.
UHP confirmed that five people in the bus were in critical condition.
Sgt. Nick Street says that they have no information on the status of people being transported to medical treatment centers in the area.
"As for what led to that, we go back to our investigation and make sure we have a precise schedule of the location of the bus, of what the driver was doing, of any incident possible defective equipment in the bus itself, Said the street. "We will do a lot of investigations into the cause of this incident."
According to other statements from the patrol of Utah Highway, the bus was heading east on the SR-12 when it passed the right side of the road. The driver is over-corrected to the left, which makes the bus roll once. The bus was laid on a guardrail and finally stopped on its wheels.
The Kane County Sheriff's Office sent out alerts asking the public to provide help if he spoke fluent Chinese. The goal was to help the communication while the speakers were following the scene.
The SR-12 was closed shortly after midday Friday and motorists were advised to avoid the area to allow emergency personnel to begin their intervention and conduct an investigation.
Authorities were still working Friday afternoon to identify the people involved in the incident. Street says the UHP is working with its federal partners to review the evidence available. He added that efforts were underway to provide information to the families of the deceased in China.
"We are working with the Chinese consulate to send notifications to the next of kin," Street said.
Westbound SR-12 tracks were blocked for a period of time. This road has since reopened.
