I agree with Paul’s opinion that it has never felt so dominant, but in addition to the American goal they hit the wood twice and forced Haitian goalkeeper Brian Sylvestre (a former international of the American Youth) to make a number of quality stops. Matt Turner, meanwhile, didn’t have to do much until the very end – a game, it should be noted, that he clearly fell foul of.
Was it perfect? No of course not. But it was never perfect against Haiti, no matter the training, the personnel or the principles of play. Haitians always create opportunities at the break, no matter who they play, and this group has been particularly good at it. over the past few years (although it should be noted that they really missed Frantzdy Pierrot). When they do, your defenders just have to make the necessary plays.
The American defenders, in other words, have done their job.
And that’s a very good baseline to have from this group. Berhalter must be confident that Miles Robinson and Walker Zimmerman, in particular, will not lose the United States to very good opponents from Concaf.
