Butterball recalls nearly 200,000 kilograms of ground turkey after five people get sick

Butterball, LLC, a poultry producer based in North Carolina, is voluntarily recalling approximately 78,164 pounds of raw ground turkey that may have been contaminated with Salmonellaaccording to an announcement made Wednesday by the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the United States Department of Agriculture.

FSIS, in collaboration with several public health partners, discovered the possibility of contamination by investigating an outbreak of Salmonella diseases involving five patients in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Four of the patients lived in the same residence in Wisconsin, where officials collected three samples of Butterball ground turkey that tested positive for the bacteria.

The resident of Minnesota tested positive for the same strain of Salmonella and also reported eating ground turkey, although the brand is unknown, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health.

According to the Butterball website, the ground turkey in question has a consumer or sales deadline of July 26, 2018 and has been shipped to retail establishments and outlets across the country.

"Since these products were wrapped nine months ago, it is highly unlikely that the product will be found in retail stores, but it is possible that consumers will have products in their freezers," ABC News told Christa. Leupen, spokesperson for Butterball.

Health officials warn people likely to have Butterball ground turkey in their freezer to check the date and get rid of any product possibly mentioned in the recall.

Recallable products include:

• 48 oz Tray packed in plastic containing "fresh turkey every day BUTTERBALL WITH NATURAL FLAVOR (85% BEGIN / 15% FAT)" with date of sale or freezing of 26/07/18, lot code 8188 and codes UPC 22655-71555 or 22655-71557 shown on the label.

• 48 oz Tray packed in plastic containing "fresh turkey every day BUTTERBALL WITH NATURAL FLAVOR (93% BEGIN / 7% GREASE)" with date of sale or freezing of 07/26/18, lot code 8188 and code UPC 22655-71556 shown on the label.

• 16 ounces. Tray packed in plastic containing "fresh turkey every day BUTTERBALL WITH NATURAL FLAVOR (85% LEAN / 15% FAT)" with date of sale or freezing of 26/06/18, lot code 8188 and UPC code 22655-71546 represented on the label.

• 16 ounces. Tray packed in plastic containing "fresh turkey every day BUTTERBALL WITH NATURAL FLAVOR (93% LEAN / 7% FAT)" with date of sale or freezing of 26/07/18, lot code 8188 and UPC codes 22655-71547 or 22655-71561. represented on the label

The USDA calls this a Class I recall, defined on the website as "a health risk situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious and harmful consequences for the health or death ".

Food consumption containing Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illness, accompanied by symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within 12 to 72 hours of taking the Contaminated food for four to seven days.

Butterball states that consumers who have questions about the recall should call 1-800-288-8372, ext. 4am, between 10am and 7pm ET.
