Buttigieg joins prez suit parade to go on pilgrimage to the Plains …

Democrat Pete Buttigieg has become the last hope at the White House to visit former President Jimmy Carter in his hometown of Plains with a swing in southwestern Georgia over the weekend.

The mayor of South Bend, in the Indian state, joined a large crowd during Carter's Sunday School at the Maranatha Baptist Church. His campaign also revealed that he had lunched with Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, to discuss topics ranging from religion to politics.

He is the third presidential candidate to make the pilgrimage to visit Carter, 94, this election cycle. US Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey went to the Plains with Representative John Lewis in January, and Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota went shortly thereafter.

This is the latest in a series of candidates who has been hugging Carter over the years, including Howard Dean's stellar 2004 tour, which has garnered national media attention.

Carter had a test relationship with Hillary Clinton, revealing after the election that he was supporting Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders during the primary.

The former president has not supported any candidate in the race, just about all other Democratic leaders and party activists.

Former US Senator Max Cleland is the rare exception: he announced his support for former Vice President Joe Biden just hours after his enrollment in the race.
