Buyers of dollar stores in the state of New York may have bought expired products

ALBANY, NY (WKBW) – Shoppers at New York-priced stores may have purchased expired products, including obsolete engine oil and over-the-counter medications , outdated.

The Attorney General's Office of the State of New York has just released the results of an undercover survey on the Dollar General, Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores. The Office of the Auditor General made a number of store visits in March 2016 and found that the three retail chains were stocking drugs often several months after their expiry date. The investigation also revealed that some engine oils sold by Dollar General were not suitable for most cars built after 1930.

The three stores will have to pay combined fines of $ 1.2 million. In addition, regulations with Dollar General and Dollar Tree / Family Dollar require stores to make significant reforms. Stores will be required to maintain and use an outdated drug registration and tracking system, as well as enforce the rules that would require employees to rotate inventory and perform monthly audits of their products to search for obsolete items.
