After sitting idle for a week, BYU climbed to the last standings in the college football playoffs.

The Cougars were placed at No. 13, ahead of Northwestern and behind Indiana.

BYU, ranked No.14 in the top CFP rankings last week, currently has no opponents scheduled for this weekend. The Cougars are scheduled to be in action on December 12, when they host San Diego State at 8 p.m. MST.

“Not just us, but across the country it was unanimous. People thought BYU was in the top 10, but the committee is holding on… again, very, very surprised by this ranking, ”said Kirk Herbstreit, analyst at ESPN.

College football playoff committee chairman Gary Barta once again said on the ESPN rankings that the strength of BYU’s schedule was the determining factor in not ranking the Cougars higher.

The Pac-12 has three Top 25-ranked teams – No.20 USC, No.22 Washington and No.23 Oregon. USC, which was inactive this weekend after its game against Colorado was canceled, dropped two spots. Washington entered the standings after beating Utah and Oregon dropped eight spots after losing to Oregon State. Games played are clearly a factor in the standings – 9-0 Coastal Carolina, who plays in the Sun Belt, is ranked undefeated ahead of USC and Washington.
