The BYU Cougars will actually take on the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on Saturday because the Liberty Flames’ COVID-19 issues made them unable to play against the Chanticleers.
Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated was the first to break the news, and Deseret News confirmed it through a source before BYU officially announced it on Thursday morning.
“We are grateful that this match between our two teams can be organized in such a timely manner. BYU Director of Athletics Tom Holmoe said in the announcement. “It’s good to have a partner like ESPN who can help put together such a meaningful game at this point in the season.”
There was a momentum towards BYU and Coastal Carolina on Wednesday, although Liberty was awaiting COVID-19 test results before retiring from the game, which ESPN’s College GameDay will broadcast.
Kick-off will take place at 3:30 p.m. MST and the contest will air on ESPNU.
The Cougars and Chanticleers are both unbeaten at 9-0. BYU is No.13 in the college football playoff standings and Coastal Carolina is No.18.
Between initial reports Thursday and BYU officially announcing the game, Liberty released a statement which read in part, “The decision to suspend football activities and cancel Saturday’s game was made by medical staff at the University. of Liberty. The game will not be rescheduled this season, but will be at a later date. “
College GameDay will air from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. CEST on Saturday morning.
The Cougars and Chanticleers have a common opponent this season, Texas State, a heavily beaten team. BYU won 52-14 on October 24 and Coastal Carolina took the 49-14 victory last Saturday.
