MIAMI – Dolphins Head Coach / Coach Jim Caldwell is taking leave for the 2019 NFL season to tackle an undisclosed health problem, announced Saturday. team.
Caldwell, 64, is expected to move away from the team to focus on his health throughout the season, but he will serve as a consultant for the Dolphins and veteran voice for head coach Brian Flores.
"I'm going to retire because of medical complications that require my full attention," said Caldwell. "I want to thank [owner] Stephen Ross, [GM] Chris Grier, coach Flores and the rest of the organization for the support they've provided, to me and my family. "
In February, the Dolphins hired Caldwell, an experienced and accomplished offensive and two-time NFL head coach, shortly after Flores came to the position of head coach.
Dolphins quarterbacks Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh Rosen have done all they can to delight in the ability to dig into Caldwell's brain this spring. He has excelled throughout his career by coaching quarterbacks such as Peyton Manning, Joe Flacco and Matthew Stafford in their best seasons.
"We focus on Jim's health and support him in every way possible," said Flores. "With his knowledge and experience, Jim has been a valued member of our coaching staff and will continue to serve as a sounding board throughout the season."
The Dolphins have not made any staff changes to fill the role of Caldwell at the moment.
Dolphins Deputy Head Coach Jerry Schuplinski, recruited in February by the New England Patriots, already played an important role with the QB and is a strong candidate to take on a larger role when Training will start on July 25th.
