The California attorney general on Tuesday pledged to sue the Trump administration if it decided to revoke the state's power to enforce stricter car emission standards.
The Environmental Protection Agency hoped Wednesday to go back on some aspects of the Clean Air Act, which California has used for years to set its own emission standards. To revoke the special derogation would mean that no state can put in place stricter pollution control than the federal government.

"As the White House clings to the past, automakers and American families are adopting cleaner cars," California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said in a statement. "The evidence is irrefutable: today's clean car standards are achievable, science-based, and a boon for hard-working American families and public health."
"You have no basis or authority to withdraw this waiver," Becerra added. "We are ready to fight for a future that you seem unable to understand, we will see you in court if you stick on our way."
Governor Gavin Newsom also added that "California will never wait for Washington's authorization to protect the health and safety of children and their families.
"While the White House has abdicated its responsibility to the rest of the world for reducing emissions and fighting global warming, California has intensified its efforts," he wrote.
Newsom also accused the Trump administration of being motivated by a "political vendetta" rather than by "(learning) from California".

California's power to adopt more stringent emissions standards dates back to the Congressional waiver of the 1970 Clean Air Act. The state has long pushed automobile manufacturers to adopt more fuel-efficient and less polluting vehicles.
California reached an agreement earlier this year with four of the world's largest automakers – Ford, Honda, BMW and Volkswagen – to bypass the Trump Administration's frost and fuel economy emissions reduction standards. by Obama in 2021.
