There are 18 million unvaccinated people in California, according to the state’s Immunization Dashboard. State health officials say it is these residents who are behind the further increase in Covid-19 cases across the state.

The California Department of Public Health on Wednesday released figures showing in early July that case rates among unvaccinated residents were 600% higher than those among those vaccinated. What’s more, more than 90% of patients hospitalized with Covid in the state are unvaccinated.

On July 4, the 7-day average number of cases per 100,000 was 4.6. By Wednesday, that number had risen to 12.7. Barely 24 hours later, it had risen to 14.2. The rise is due to the spread of the Delta variant among the unvaccinated. For the week of July 14 to 20, the average case rate among unvaccinated Californians was 20.7 per 100,000 per day. The average rate of cases among vaccinated Californians was significantly less than 3.5 per 100,000 per day. This gap has likely widened further, as the overall average of cases per 100,000 has increased significantly since then.

California calls for universal masking in indoor public places a week after Newsom said,

In terms of raw new cases, Thursday’s number of 7,457 is the highest in five and a half months, since February 10, 2021. And it reached that very total. with about 55% of the total state population vaccinated.

The state’s test positivity rate – another reliable indicator of spread – rose more than 20% in 7 days, from 5.1% to 6.2% on Thursday. On June 15, the day the state lifted Covid restrictions, it was 0.9%. In addition, the line on the graph representing test positivity becomes increasingly vertical.

Covid-related hospitalizations, often referred to as a delayed indicator, have also started to increase. The number is increasing by a few hundred a day and, at 3,977 on Wednesday, it is the highest in more than four months. Likewise, the supply of intensive care beds has slowly started to decline.
