Representative Adam Schiff, D-Calif., Could seek to quit his seat in Congress in favor of state-level employment, according to a new report.
Schiff is reportedly working behind the scenes to pressure California Governor Gavin Newsom to appoint him as the next Golden State attorney general, Axios reported Tuesday evening, citing sources familiar with the situation.
The seat will open soon if its current occupant and President Biden’s candidate for Health and Human Services secretary Xavier Becerra is confirmed. It was once held by Vice President Kamala Harris, before her election to the US Senate.

The move would mark a major change from Schiff, who is currently the influential chairman of the House Intelligence Committee which saw his national profile rise during the Russia probe and then the former president’s first indictment. Donald Trump. But it would also give him more time in his home state before the possible retirement of California Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, 87, at the end of her term in 2025.
The Schiff district is reliably Democrat, and the party would still hold a majority in the House of Representatives until its replacement is chosen – albeit restricted.
Schiff has represented California’s 28th District for almost 20 years. As a former federal prosecutor who graduated from Harvard Law School, he has experience that would ostensibly qualify him to lead the state attorney general’s office – although critics have accused him of partisanship.
His office could not be reached immediately for comment.

It is unclear who would occupy Schiff’s seat on the Intel Committee. California Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell, another ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, remains a member of the committee – despite his unexplained ties to an alleged Chinese spy named Fang Fang.
For its part, Newsom is facing a low point in its approval ratings – a recall effort aimed at his impeachment gaining traction and a worsening of the coronavirus outbreak.
