California Governor Newsom sees spike in support as recall election looms, poll finds

California Governor Gavin Newsom appears to have a favorable chance ahead of the state’s recall election next week, according to a poll released Friday.

The Probable Voters Study, conducted by the University of California at the Berkeley Institute for Government Studies, found that only 38.5% of those polled support efforts to recall Newsom, while 60% said that ‘they opposed this decision. Of those who responded to the questionnaire, only 1.5% had not yet decided how to vote in the election.

“The results point to a significant change of pace in the state as significantly more Californians attend the pending election and intend to vote no,” IGS Co-Director G. Cristina Mora said of of the study.

A previous summer poll indicated voters were divided over whether to oust the current governor. Forty-seven percent of probable California voters polled in that poll said they were in favor of Newsom’s recall, with 50 percent opposed.

The recall election, slated for Sept. 14 in the Golden State, will allow voters to decide whether to allow Newsom to continue his term as governor or elect a new leader. Larry Elder, a conservative radio host, is leading the state’s Republican candidates to defeat Newsom.

President Joe Biden is due to travel to California on Monday, a day before the recall election, to campaign at a rally for Newsom in Long Beach.

Postal ballots were sent out in August. Biden will encourage voters to make sure they submit their completed ballots on time. Californians must either return the ballots by mail, postmarked no later than Tuesday, September 14; drop them off at a drop box, polling station or county polling station no later than 8 p.m. Tuesday; or vote in person on Tuesday.
