Komins, a volunteer firefighter from the Blue Lake Fire Department in Humboldt County, had embarked on a solo trek from August 10th. His family reported the disappearance of this 34-year-old man when he did not return home as planned five days later, according to the sheriff's office.
Preliminary evidence suggests that the Komins may have fallen on steep, rocky terrain, the police said.
An experienced hiker and emergency medical technician, Komins had food, water, backpacks, his cell phone and a GPS with him while hiking, according to the sheriff.
On the evening of Wednesday, August 14, the vacant Komins vehicle was located near a Trinity County trail, police said.
According to the sheriff's office, the Komins' localization efforts involved more than 40 individual researchers, numerous helicopter teams and various off-road vehicle teams. Helicopters have also placed ground searchers in high altitude areas to investigate difficult-to-access tracks.
Sunday morning, the 12 rescue teams began to investigate their respective areas at the first light of day, announced the sheriff's office. Later in the morning, a helicopter from the California Highway Patrol observed what appeared to be an off-road backpack between L Lake and Mirror Lake. The backpack was recovered by ground search teams already close to the area.
The team identified the backpack as belonging to the Komins, continued to comb the scene and quickly found his body, the police said. The remains of Komins were then transported by helicopter.
