The Orange County Sheriff’s Department on Wednesday released new video of a shootout in September that left a man dead after two homeless liaison officers arrested him for allegedly jaywalking.
As officers attempted to apprehend the man, a deputy said he grabbed his gun, prompting the other officer to fire two shots.
The new video includes dashcam footage, cellphone video and surveillance footage of the shooting that killed 42-year-old black man Kurt Reinhold.

Dash cam footage from the incident shows two MPs, both from the Homeless Outreach Team, observing Reinhold from across the street and wondering if he is walking around.
“Look at this. He’s going to jaywalk,” said an assistant shortly after one o’clock. The officers then discuss if he’s really jaywalking, one saying, “It’s checked” and the other saying, “I don’t know, man…. He just stopped in the middle. . “
In the middle of the debate, a deputy begins to walk towards the man and an officer says, “Don’t do case law.”
The officers then stop at Reinhold, who is standing on the sidewalk, and the three men exit the frame but their audio can still be heard.
Reinhold looks confused as to why they’re stopping him, saying, “For what? … Where? Where? … I mean, why are you stopping me? … Stop touching me. “
The officers repeatedly tell him to stop: “Sit down … Because you are walking in withers, go out there on the sidewalk … Are you going to stop or are we going to have you? stop? “

Video from a spectator’s cell phone shows Reinhold walking away from the police and scratching officers’ hands as they attempt to detain him. About two and a half minutes into the interaction, MPs tackled Reinhold to the ground.
As the three men struggled on the ground, surveillance footage from a nearby hotel shows Reinhold’s hand near or on an officer’s holster. The deputy says, “He has my gun.” Shortly after, a deputy fired two shots about seven seconds apart.
After shooting Reinhold, MPs begin to practice CPR on him. He was declared deceased at the scene.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office is leading the main investigation into the shooting. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Department is also investigating and an internal administrative investigation is also underway.
The September 23 shooting sparked protests amid nationwide unrest over police violence.

Reinhold’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the sheriff’s office in December, according to the Orange County Register.
“The MPs who shot and killed Kurt did the exact opposite of what well-trained officers are supposed to do,” Neil Gehlawat, one of the lawyers representing Reinhold’s family, told the newspaper. “This lawsuit aims not only to expose the injustice surrounding Kurt’s death, but also the lack of adequate training provided to these MPs.”
