PHOENIX (Reuters) – A 67-year-old California man died after falling on a ledge while visiting the Grand Canyon, his third death in eight days in Arizona's popular tourist destination. Thursday announced park officials.

The man was traveling alone to Grand Canyon National Park around 11:30 am on Wednesday, when he was reported to have dropped off at an observation point on the south shore, spokesman Murray Shoemaker said.

The rescuers were alerted by a passerby and the body of the man was found a few hours later, about 122 meters below the edge, by the helicopter park and a rescue technical team, said Shoemaker. The name of the victim and his hometown were not immediately released.

The National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner are investigating the death, but officials said the death was initially declared accidental.

This was the third confirmed death in separate incidents occurred in this year's sprawling attraction, including two inside the park's boundaries.

Park officials said that a corpse was discovered on March 26 in an undeveloped area on the south shore of the park, but close to any viewpoint. No other details have been published.

Two days later, a Hong Kong tourist died before being photographed in front of a tribune on the tribal land of Hualapai.

The purple-hued canyon is one of the world's most popular outdoor tourist attractions, attracting 6.38 million visitors to the park in 2018.
