California MP nearly died from fentanyl exposure in arrest

Dramatic body camera footage shows a California sheriff’s deputy nearly died after being exposed to fentanyl during an arrest last month.

As seen in a public safety video released Wednesday by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, Deputy David Faiivae was exposed to fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, on July 3.

In the video, which also features body camera footage of the incident, Cpl. Scott Crane says he was helping train Faiivae on the day of the arrest. He explained that the MP “found a white substance which he suspected to be drugs”.

“I was like, ‘hey man, too close.’ You can’t get close to it. Seconds later it took a few steps back and collapsed, “Crane said.

Crane can be seen in body camera footage giving Faiive a nasal spray of naloxone, an anti-overdose drug from opioids.

“I remember not feeling good, then I fell back, and I don’t remember anything after that,” Faiivae said in the public safety video. “It was in an instant.”

“I couldn’t breathe,” he added. “I was trying to catch my breath, but I couldn’t breathe at all.”

When Faiivae is heard speaking again in the body camera footage after collapsing, Crane tells him, “I got you, okay? I’m not going to let you die.

After emergency personnel arrived to transport Faiivae to an area hospital, Crane said he reacted “again” to the drug.

San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore in the public safety video warned viewers of the dangers of fentanyl, noting that drug-related deaths in California have increased by nearly 46% in the past year.

Overdose deaths reached 93,000 in 2020, up from 72,000 in 2019. Authorities said fentanyl was one of the main killers.
