California official calls for pause on specific Moderna vaccine due to possible allergic reaction

SACRAMENTO, California. – California State Epidemiologist Dr Erica S. Pan released a statement Sunday evening recommending that suppliers withhold administration of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine batch “ 041L20A ” due to possible allergic reactions under investigation.

“A higher than usual number of possible allergic reactions have been reported with a specific lot of Moderna vaccine administered at a community vaccination clinic. Less than 10 people required medical attention in a 24 hour period, ”said Dr Pan.

According to the statement, “out of extreme caution and also recognizing the extremely limited supply of vaccines, we recommend that suppliers use other available vaccine stocks and suspend administration of Moderna Lot 041L20A vaccines until the CDC, FDA, Moderna and State investigation completed. We will provide an update as we learn more. “

More than 330,000 doses of this batch were distributed to 287 suppliers across the state. The shipments arrived in California between Jan. 5 and 12, officials said.

The state has not been made aware of any other groups or individual events related to this batch, according to health officials.

“The manufacturer, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are reviewing the batch and associated medical information.

Suppliers of the COVID-19 vaccine should continue with their routine precautions to recognize and manage allergic reactions and potential adverse events, ”the statement said.

Health officials expect to provide an update this week as they learn more.
