A 13-year-old boy who claimed to have killed three people was shot dead by police in Southern California on Thursday in a tense confrontation in a cemetery, authorities said.
Officers from the San Bernardino Police Department were dispatched to the Pioneer Memorial Cemetery at around 1:50 p.m. when the child called and reported that he had killed three people. An investigation later determined that the allegation was false.
On the phone to a dispatcher, the boy reportedly said “If they kill me, I will have to kill them,” referring to officers who responded, police said.

During the call, the boy fired several shots, authorities said. Several passers-by were in the cemetery at the time, but none were injured.
Officers who responded discovered the boy was armed with a handgun loaded with an extended magazine, police said. They took up positions around the perimeter of the cemetery to contain it and protect the public, police said.
“They prepared to make verbal contact with the suspect and negotiate his surrender,” police said. “While the officers were doing this, the suspect fired one more shot.”
The boy refused to drop the gun and was shot dead after pointing his gun at officers, police said.
He was taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries. His condition was not disclosed. No officer was injured.
Authorities did not disclose the number of shots fired by officers.
Investigators found two handguns with additional magazines after the confrontation, police said.

After the shooting, detectives recovered two handguns, four additional magazines and a large ammo cache. Authorities said weapons and ammunition indicated the boy “was prepared for a prolonged confrontation.”
He may have attempted suicide by a cop, FOX 11 Los Angeles reported.
