US Representative Paul Cook of California announced on Tuesday that he would not run again in 2020, adding his name to the wave of GOP departures that shook his party and let the Democrats topple several seats.
The legislator with four terms is one of more than a dozen Republicans to announce their retirement in recent weeks. In a statement, he announced his intention to report to the San Bernardino Supervisory Board, the Los Angeles Times reported.
"Serving in Congress has been an absolute honor and I am proud of my many victories in an atmosphere of partisans," he said in a statement. "Our great desert needs strong and consistent leadership at the county level, and I pledge to fight for this region with the same dedication and conviction that I have demonstrated throughout my career. . "

Cook, a Marine Corps Veteran, sits on House Armed Services and Natural Resources committees and has previously served on the California State Assembly. He was elected for the first time to represent the 8th District of California Congress in 2012.
He was re-elected in 2018 against a Tea Party challenger with 60% of the vote.
Cook's seat will likely remain under Republican control because of the conservative thinness of the district. President Trump won the district in 2016 with over 54% of the vote.

Jay Obernolte, a California member, said he would seek to replace Cook.
The Democrats toppled several seats in the House last year and are looking to expand the party majority in the House. Many of the GOP's departures are in states targeted by democrats, such as Texas.
