Representative Paul Cook (R-Yucca Valley) will retire from Congress at the end of his tenure and announce his candidacy to serve on the San Bernardino County Supervisory Board, according to John Sobel, the deputy chief of staff of the MP.
The Republican delegation of the United States House in California has been significantly reduced in recent years. In mid-term 2018, the Democrats took control of half of the remaining 14 Republican seats in California, which has a total of 53 districts.
The departure of Cook from the 8th congressional district will mark the last episode of a series of retirements of the House of Republicans, legislators having had to face the life of the minority. In total, more than a dozen GOP members have announced plans to leave Congress after 2020, including several in Texas.
Cook, who was mayor of Yucca Valley and sat at the state assembly before being elected to Congress in 2012, is in his fourth term. He plans to announce a race to represent the supervisory board of the 1st District of San Bernardino County. Robert Lovingood, who is currently in office, recently announced that he will not run again.
Republicans hold a four percentage point advance on voter registration in the district, which stretches from Mono County to San Bernardino County, along the border with Nevada. But despite the Democrats' recent interest in making inroads in the district, it has long been known as a deeply conservative region. President Trump beat Hillary Clinton by more than 15 percentage points, surpassing Mitt Romney's margin in 2012 in the district, and Cook won his last reelection fight against a Republican compatriot with 60% of the vote.
The assembly Jay Obernolte (R-Big Bear Lake), whose district overlaps about two thirds of the 8th district of Congress, is one of the potential candidates. A spokesman for Obernolte released a statement in which he praised the service provided by Cook and added that " [Cook] Obernolte "intends to continue advocacy with Congressman Cook."
