A California teacher resigned after being taped making racist comments about a black student and his mother earlier this year, SFGate reported on Monday.

Kimberly Newman, who was a science teacher at Desert Willow Fine Arts, Science and Technology Magnet Academy in Palmdale, allegedly made the comments shortly after speaking with the student’s mother during a Zoom call in January on Martin. Luther King Jr. Day.

Newman reportedly spoke with mother Katura Stokes about issues with the digital learning platform used by the school.

But once the conversation was over, Newman wouldn’t have realized the call never ended.

In the audio Stokes recorded of the call, Newman could be heard appearing to criticize her.

“She answered her phone for the first time this year. I mean, these parents are that kind of stuff… they are. … He is black. They are a black family, ”Newman said.

“I see what you’re not going through,” said a man later identified as the teacher’s husband by the Orange County Register.

“Your son has learned to lie to everyone and to make excuses… for being a child. Ever since you taught him to make excuses that nothing is his fault This is what black people do, ”you might hear him say a few moments later.

According to SFGate, Newman’s resignation comes after he was put on leave. She also reportedly refused to cooperate in an investigation into the case.
