Under a new order Newsom will unveil on Wednesday, California will become the first state in the country to implement such a requirement, which will take effect in mid-October, sources told CNN.
Sanitation will closely mirror a similar mandate that all California healthcare workers get vaccinated.
The warrant was first reported by Politico on Tuesday evening.
The school districts of San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento and Long Beach have already implemented such a measure. The state’s largest school district, Los Angeles Unified, has required weekly Covid testing, but has not required educators to be vaccinated.
“We bring all of our kids safely back to in-person classes,” Newsom said Friday at an event touting mental health resources. “We want to do it in a safe way where these kids can get that full support.”
Most districts and unions have been very supportive of the health order, sources said.
CNN has contacted the California Teachers Union, which represents educators statewide.
“Those who are not vaccinated should get vaccinated. That way we can keep our children, stress free and anxiety free, in person throughout the school year,” Newsom said on Friday.
California is home to more than 1,000 school districts employing more than 300,000 teachers and approximately 6.1 million students.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
