Two young sisters, who disappeared Friday night after being suspected of being in a wooded area near their home in northern California, were found "safe and sound" Sunday, authorities said.

The girls were found unhurt and "in a good mood" about 2.2 km south of their home in Benbow, about 70 km south of Eureka, in the northwestern part of the state.

"It's a very rural area," Honsal told reporters, adding that the research areas were steep and heavily forested.

Additional research teams arrived on Saturday from neighboring counties, and officials said at a press conference that clues had been found in the woods. Lieutenant Mike Fridley stated that some of the cereal bar wrappers found in the woods were the mark of Carrico's house which, according to the mother, had recently been purchased.

"Packaging has shown us the direction to go where they started," said Fridley.

In addition to the package trail, Fridley said some of the girl's boot prints had been found in the woods, which helped the researchers try to locate the sisters in the rural area. US Coast Guard helicopters have been used to try to get a better view of the rough terrain, but Fridley has indicated so far that the technology of the aircraft was not useful in this thick wooded area.

"When the information reaches us, we react to it," said Fridley. "It's a bit like a game of chess. "
