With the arrival of Call of DutyIn season 2 of February 25, the zombies were in the spotlight. Cold War Black Ops has big zombies “Epidemic” mode, and WarzoneVerdansk’s map has a ship full of undead. Warzone is slowly infected with the undead, leading to a new mode or potential map.

When the cargo ship Vodianoy crashed on the shores of Verdansk two weeks ago, it was pretty clear that some of the zombies on board were going to rampage. Yesterday’s update spreads the infection along the southeastern part of the map to the location of Verdansk Prison. The zombie infection did not spread as most people expected, with the ship remaining an infected area. Instead, the living dead have just abandoned the Vodianoy ship, and they have now set up camp at the prison.

Zombies can be triggered at the prison in the same way as in the Vodianoy shipwreck, by activating a machine to initiate a zombie killing event. Killing a specific number of zombies will grant access to a special loot chest with items such as high level weapons and a gas mask. But it’s very likely that these zombie infestations aren’t just about tagging material.

It might just be teasing a new Zombies mode for Warzone. But this spread of the living dead is heavily teased by Warzone developers Raven Software and the Call of Duty Blog, which makes it easy to assume that something big is about to hit Verdansk.

Part of yesterday Blog states that “immediate exfiling and subsequent fumigation is recommended”. In addition, there has been rumors of a “plague” mode come Warzone, which would require surviving a zombie outbreak and map exfiltration, otherwise a nuclear weapon would end the game.

Some players believe this will lead to an out-of-control epidemic that will end with nuclear weapons all over Verdansk’s map to contain the spread, ultimately ushering in a Cold War era. Warzone menu. This theory agrees well with WarzoneVerdansk’s constant reminder is sitting on a pile of nuclear warheads. Nuclear bunkers keep opening their doors and teasing these warheads, so maybe zombies will indeed be the looming threat that will detonate all of these nuclear weapons.

Verdansk’s map never really reached its full potential and updates to the landscape were scarce, but I always enjoyed my time there. I have a lot of memories of shenanigans with friends, like Warzone made for a great distraction during unusual times last year. Having said that, I’m all for qualifying it and starting over. A zombie outbreak might be a fun way to send Verdansk racing, but I doubt this event will be the satisfying ending many are hoping for.

My biggest worry is that all of this buildup for a Zombies event is going at a breakneck pace, similar to a corpse. Teasers from last year leading to Warzoneof “Know your story” the live event dragged on for weeks. I was a huge fan of community involvement with in-game Easter egg teasers and puzzles, but if you drag something around long enough it loses some of its excitement.

It’s possible the weekly Warzone the updates will infect a different location each time, and it will be even more the same until we finally reach the conclusion of season 2. The season is barely underway, it will probably end around the end of April, So we have a long way to go until we reach the final that the developers are preparing.

I would love to see Raven Software really speed up this infection process and give us a Zombie infested map with some interesting modes and twists. Maybe add some of the big ‘elite’ zombies found in Cold WarZombies mode, or include mini Easter eggs to solve. We’ll see what happens next.
