Call of Dutybattle royale of Warzone is just under a year old. When it launched in March 2020, I praised the 150 player online game for smooth gameplay, streamlined mechanics, and fast-paced action. But all the features that once did Warzone one of the best battle royales to fall into now feels embarrassed by the wreckage created from recent updates. As it is, Warzone is a big mess of bugs, cheats, and gun balance issues.

Keeping up with the trend of games as a live service, constantly updating a massive game like Warzone can be both a blessing and a curse. New content keeps the game fresh with new weapons, modes and cosmetics. But every time something is added to the game, something else seems to break.

At the end of last year, Warzone spent many weeks in the grip of a unlimited mastodon glitch, which allowed players to spawn an endless number of Juggernaut kill streaks. The Juggernaut costume consists of heavy armor and allows the player to wield a minigun, making for a frustrating battle royale experience when faced with just one or two of these threats. Fortunately, this problem has been fixed for now. But some old issues resurfaced, including the Stim Firing fault.

Stim shot is a tactical piece of equipment used for healing, but it is abused with an exploit that allows a player to have continuous and infinite healing. This allows players to stand Warzonepoisonous gas, which would otherwise cause near death, and outlast all other opponents for unjust victories. Developer Raven Software tweeted that the issue with stim shot was fixed with a patch last week, but some players always report equipment abuse.

A long-term problem that has not been resolved is the loading freeze. Many players have reported that their game freezes for several seconds after trying to recover their lost loadout leaving them vulnerable on the map. I haven’t personally encountered this problem, but it seems to pop up a bit to others.

The shootings have also been difficult since December 16, when the developers incorporated the Cold War Black Ops guns in the Modern war-based Warzone. Throwing all of those extra weapons into the mix created some bugs and balance issues. Cold WarThe DMR 14 tactical rifle from WarzoneThe most powerful pistol of the brand, dominating the meta, followed closely by the Diamatti dual pistols and the MAC-10 submachine gun. A January 13 update provided nerves to both the DMR 14 and the Double Diamattis, but they’re both still powerful weapons, especially since the pistols feel completely unchanged.

On the bright side, the DMR 14 nerf prompts players to branch out to try and find the next best gun for long range combat. I still see a lot of players running and shooting with the MAC-10 and Diamattis, but it’s nice to see a slightly better variety of weapons in the game. Modern warThe CR-56 AMAX assault rifle is my favorite for Warzone, and it feels like he can be a contender again without the DMR meta in play.

There is also a reloading problem this can happen with some of the built-in weapons. You can reload the weapon and watch the animation happen, but sometimes the weapon is not actually reloaded. It cost me my life in addition to a few shootouts while using the Cold War weapons in Warzone.

Some players want Cold War pull-out pistols Warzone, but I think the guns just need a good balance. Of course, it should be noted that Warzone continues to be the bridge that connects the future Call of Duty titles, the pool of weapons and equipment could become an overwhelming mess. I think Call of Duty would do well to take a page from Fortnite, skip some weapons to keep the game balanced and keep things fresh. I can understand the reluctance to jump weapons that players have purchased cosmetics for, but it would be less of a problem to jump an item like Stim Shot so that players don’t have a chance to abuse it.

Item issues aside, there’s still cheating rampant Warzone. Activision started fighting cheaters in Modern war and Warzone in April of last year, but nothing seems to stop the influx of wallhacks and aimbotting which is damaging the integrity of matches. All players can really do is report the cheater from the in-game option, but Activision’s review and banning of accounts doesn’t seem to matter; cheaters simply create new accounts. Last May, Activision added a two-factor authentication requirement for all new Warzone PC accounts. But hackers are good at finding workarounds, and they always blatantly cheat. No one wants to deal with cheaters, and many content creators and professionals have had enough.

In terms of integrity in WarzoneIn the competitive gaming scene, cash prize tournaments are often compromised, with players finding ways to bypass the game’s skill-based matchmaking and place themselves in “robot lobbies” of less skilled players. Several methods have been discussed, including specific routers to ping locations or use accounts with boosted statistics in reverse. The flow Twitch Rivals Doritos Bowl is the first big Warzone tournament since Cold War Black Ops integration to present private lobbies to avoid any divergence from skill-based matchmaking. Hopefully all future competitions will feature private lobbies, especially the big prize tournaments.

Besides all these bigger issues, a little criticism I have is that the Verdansk map is out of date. I complained for a long time that there is so much untapped potential in the Verdansk landscape. Instead of getting the Verdansk map updates for Season 1, we have a second map: the smaller one, Cold Wartheme “Rebirth Island.” A smaller map adds some variety in terms of scenery and match pace, and I often enjoy faster, more deadly matches than slower, campy matches on Verdansk. While I still don’t think it needs the same bells and whistles as the larger Verdansk map, Rebirth Island is now my favorite option for Warzone matches.

Not all complaints here are meant to say that Warzone may not be a fun time, but it can often be marred by some bugs or tricks that shouldn’t be constant factors in an online shooter. I threw countless hours into Warzone, and I want this to remain my favorite battle royale, but now it’s too tough around the edges to enjoy it as it is. I’d love to see a huge update that just focuses on cleaning up bugs and balancing weapons, which is more important than just cramming new cosmetics or adding limited-time modes. Warzone needs a little TLC to get back to the fantastic form he launched last year.
