EXCLUSIVE: The IATSE is now preparing for a second strike against the film and television industry. With the union and its 13 West Coast studios already threatening to strike over the terms of a new basic Hollywood deal, IATSE is now seeking a second strike leave vote for a separate contract covering film work and television in much of the rest of the country. This contract is called the “Area Standards Agreement” and covers 23 locations outside of Los Angeles.
The two contracts – the basic agreement and the regional standards agreement – expired on July 31, but were extended, the union said, “in an effort to exhaust all opportunities to strike a deal.” Basic deal talks with management’s AMPTP broke on Monday, prompting the union to seek leave to strike from members of the 13 West Coast studio locals. The next day, talks broke down for the regional standards agreement, which covers 23 different locals outside of LA that represent many of the same types of production workers and artisans.
“Negotiations for the regional standards agreement have stalled,” IATSE President Matt Loeb and leaders of the 23 locals said in a letter to their members dated September 21. Today AMPTP informed IATSE that they have no more changes to their last position. This failure to continue negotiations can only be interpreted one way. They simply will not address them. fundamental issues that we have championed time and time again from the start, and as a result, we will now proceed with a strike authorization vote to demonstrate our commitment to achieving long overdue change in this industry.
