The latest of the NFL Cups has the free agent market booming.
Before and Following the surprise exit of quarterback Cam Newton by New England on Tuesday, the teams took significant steps to reduce their roster from 80 players to just 53 heading into the regular season. And, after 4 p.m. ET Tuesday, approximately 864 players will be out of work.
The Jets knocked out quarterback Josh Johnson less than a month after signing the journeyman. Mike White has been promoted to stand-in QB for star rookie Zach Wilson.
The Bears released CB Desmond Trufant, NFL insider Adam Schefter says. The 2015 Pro Bowler, who turns 31 in September, still owes the Lions $ 3.5 million. Trufant reportedly left Chicago on Aug. 13 to be with his father, who died two days later, and stayed with his family through training camp – but wants to keep playing, according to Schefter.
Chicago also cut Riley Ridley, the younger brother of famous Falcons Calvin Ridley.
Jaguars published WR Pharoh Cooper, WR Phillip Dorsett II, OL Jermaine Eluemunor, WR Devin Smith, WR Laquon Treadwell and safety Jarrod Wilson.
The Eagles took out their main receiver from last year, Travis Fulgham. After Philadelphia drafted DeVonta Smith in the first round, Fulgham began to come out of the receiving rotation. Then, with Quez Watkins’ impressive performance in training camp and preseason, Fulgham, 25, was an afterthought.
