The young camp participant continued to tear Newton apart, saying he was on the verge of becoming poor, which drew laughter from the other camp participants. Newton kept repeating that he was rich, then asked the child if he could talk to his father.

The exchange between Newton and the young child sparked a social media frenzy on Sunday. Many have defended Newton by calling the exchange “disrespectful”.

Three-time Pro Bowler Newton played the 2020 season with the New England Patriots. He completed 65.8 percent of his passes for 2,657 yards with eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Newton added 12 field scores for the Patriots, who finished 7-9 and missed the playoffs for the first time in 11 years.
