Cam Newton reveals new layer of Matt Patricia role with Patriots – CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) – Matt Patricia joined the Patriots organization this offseason after his stint as head coach of the Detroit Lions. The 46-year-old, however, did not resume a coaching role, instead taking the title of “senior football advisor”.

What this job involves, well, it’s a little mystery. As is often the case with the Patriots, information is generally only released when necessary or required. Such a philosophy can lead people like Ernie Adams to work for two decades in a vague but seemingly critical role for Bill Belichick.

Since Patricia joined the team, it has been reported that “he helped finalize the contracts” with her name printed on some of these contracts.

Now, thanks to Cam Newton dropping some things off his chest, we know that Patricia was in the room with Belichick when it came time to inform the players that they had been kicked out of the squad.

“When it happened, we walked through the meeting, and Matt Patricia was there, Bill was there, and we greeted each other and just started talking,” Newton said. “And at that point, they told me they were going to hand over the reins to Mac. And I was like, OK, cool.

Newton then said the rest of the message – that he was cut off from the team instead of being kept as a backup – wasn’t exactly articulated clearly at first.

“And it didn’t occur to me that I was like… Are you all freeing me ?! I was just asking. I was confused, ”Newton said. “Because Bill was like… we were all shocked.” Everything was uncomfortable for everyone.

Patricia was the Patriots’ defensive coordinator from 2012 to 2017, winning two Super Bowls during that time. He started with the organization in 2004 as an assistant coach. He has also worked as an assistant offensive line coach, linebacker coach and safety coach.

His stint as head coach at Detroit didn’t go as smoothly as he or the Lions had hoped, as the team went 13-29-1 before firing Patricia last season.

Since returning to the Patriots, Belichick has praised Patricia’s impact with the team.

“Yes of course Matt has been doing this for the last three years at a different organization, so he knows our process, his process and all the things around him. So he’s been really a very valuable resource and confidant and someone to talk to who has been through the same things we have been through, ”Belichick said in April. “And his experience and perspective were extremely valuable. “
