New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton isn’t exactly burning the scoreboard with passing stats this season. However, Newton has been slightly better for the Patriots over the past two weeks with at least not returning the ball with interceptions.
Newton had been caught five times in a loss pair against the Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers. While a key fumble knocked down the Patriots ‘chances a week ago against the Buffalo Bills, he played two straight games without an interception shot following the Patriots’ victory over the Jets on Monday night.
Asked after the match by reporters where he owed the improvement, Newton was blunt.
“I’m tired of sucking,” Newton said. “Easy. As a competitor you know what your standard is. Taking pride in the way you do things is what it comes down to.”
Newton completed 27 of 35 passes for 274 yards against the New York Jets on Monday night. He helped lead three scoring campaigns in the fourth quarter as the Patriots recovered from a 27-17 deficit in the last quarter to win. Newton threw for just 98 yards in the team’s 33-6 loss to the 49ers. Newton has thrown just two touchdown passes throughout the season and none since Week 3 against the Las Vegas Raiders, but he managed to find the end zone twice on the ground with his legs against the Jets.
Newton still sees a lot of room for improvement.
“You can’t hold your head up because you think too much, that’s one thing,” Newton said. “But at the same time, you are solely responsible for the performance you do and I was extremely disappointed. And, you know, it’s not like “I just did my job today”. This is what it is supposed to be every week. Efficient football. If it’s not there, take it out. I had a few mistakes tonight that I will learn and improve on. But at the end of the day, this attack thrives when we just keep the pressure on the defense. When we run or pass, short passes as well as deep passes, and we just need to improve. “
