Portsmouth, Va. – Portsmouth Health Authorities confirmed that a fox in the city was rabies positive.
The Portsmouth Department of Public Health did not give details on how they found the rabid fox. measures to prevent families and pets from being exposed to rabies.
Eliminate open-air food sources around the house:
A. Do not feed stray dogs or cats, or any wild animals.
B. Garbage cans must be securely closed with lids.
C. After feeding pets, bring food scraps back inside or dispose of them properly.
D. Bird feed should be placed in a bird feeder inaccessible to wildlife.
E. Food stored in outbuildings (stables, open garages) should be inaccessible to animals.
Avoid contact between you (or your pets) and wild animals or stray dogs and cats:
A. Report any stray animals to the Portsmouth Animal Control Office at 393-8430 and avoid contact with this animal. In case of contact between a wild animal and you or your pet, contact the Portsmouth Public Health Department at 393-8585 ext. 8585.
It is imperative that you receive medical treatment as soon as possible. Call your veterinarian
to examine your pet for sores and administer a booster rabies vaccine.
B. Keep dogs and cats confined to your property. Animals allowed to roam are more likely to come into contact with wild animals such as foxes and raccoons.
* The vaccination of all domestic animals against rabies is a law in Portsmouth.
