The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has recalled a frozen chicken burger because of possible contamination with salmonella.

The CFIA on Friday night reminded the Janes style pub-style burgers that consumers should not eat the product.

According to the agency, the recall was triggered as a result of an outbreak investigation of foodborne illness. The CFIA said it was conducting a food safety investigation, which could result in other recalls.

Since May 2017, the federal government has investigated 14 domestic outbreaks related to raw chicken, including breaded and frozen chicken products. Nine products were recalled in some of the outbreaks.

As of Friday, 474 laboratory-confirmed cases of salmonellosis had been investigated in outbreaks. Of those affected, 90 were hospitalized, the agency said.

The product recalled Friday, the Janes pub-style chicken burgers, was sold in 800 gram packs with an expiry date of 14 May 2019 (and universal product code 0 69299 12491 0).

The CFIA has stated that hamburgers should be discarded or returned to the store where they were purchased.

He also reminded Canadians to call their doctor if they became ill after consuming a recalled product.

Salmonella symptoms may include fever, chills, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headache, nausea, and vomiting.
