B.C. online divorce badistant aims to streamline paperwork
Justice Department plans to extend to applications for protection orders
The BC government opened access to an online divorce badistant to speed up undisputed divorces going through BC Supreme Court
Jointly filed divorces are those where both plaintiffs are in agreement on all matters of family law, such as child support and the division of property. In the first step of the online filing option, cases that do not involve children are accepted.
Cases involving children need to be added in the coming months. In a future phase, the BC Ministry of Justice plans to extend it to the online filing of protection orders for spouses or children.
According to the Department of Justice, the province manages nearly 10,000 divorces a year, of which 30% are reported jointly. The online filing system is designed to simplify complicated paperwork with a step-by-step website, eliminating filing errors that can result in multiple trips to the court registry.
The wizard is designed to work with a larger tablet or screen, but can be used on a smartphone. Users complete their application and print the documents for filing at the court registry.
