ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The last two Blockbuster shops in Alaska call for closure, leaving only one store open in the United States
The Anchorage and Fairbanks stores will close on Sunday and will reopen Tuesday for video clearance sales at the end of August, said Kevin Daymude, managing director of Blockbuster Alaska.
"It's going to be crazy," said Daymude of the temporary reopening. He said that the residents were sad when they heard the news and that many people remember their memories of Blockbuster.
The news was announced to Alaskans on Blockbuster Alaska's Facebook page
"Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" sent a jockstrap worn by Russell Crowe in the 2005 movie "Cinderella Man" and "The Last Week". other items at the Anchorage store, which posted it in an effort to increase business.
Daymude says the buzz of Oliver's connection has brought more people to the store.
"You would not believe how much business we've just got from those memories alone," he said. "I can not thank John Oliver enough or his show."
But this was not enough to counter a planned lease increase in both places in Alaska.
The jockstrap will likely go to the owner of the franchise, Alan Payne, who lives outside Austin, Texas

At its peak, Blockbuster had 15 stores in Alaska, said Daymude. Some stores in remote and less populated areas of the state began shutting down in the early 2000s.
In recent years, Blockbuster stores have disappeared in most of the United States
but their survival lasted longer. The closures will leave the blockbuster in Bend, Oregon, as the only holdout.
"How exciting it is," said Bend Store General Manager Sandi Harding. "It could end up being a bit chaotic for a few weeks."
