Canadian trial to compare cannabis and fentanyl for the relief of chronic pain
According to the firm, the data needed to support the claim that cannabis could help reduce the use of fentanyl in the treatment of pain
A Canadian pharmaceutical company has launched a clinical trial to determine the most effective treatment for pain: cannabis or fentanyl?
Tetra Bio-Pharma, based in Ontario, says the study will evaluate the time needed to relieve pain in patients with cancer or other chronic diseases.
"Medical cannabis can help reduce the use of drugs like fentanyl for the treatment of acute and chronic pain," said CEO Guy Chamberland in a press release.
"However, there is a lack of unconfirmed scientific data on its safety and efficacy, which will satisfy regulators, professional groups and insurers."

The trial was approved in August by the federal government and launched last month with the Health Cannabis research group.
In the first three months of this year, approximately 1,036 people died of drug overdoses in Canada, including almost 400 in British Columbia.

In June, Health Canada limited how drug manufacturers could market opioids.
