An Alert on Purple Heroin in and around Espanola was released by Public Health Sudbury and Districts on behalf of LaCloche Foothills Drug Strategy
Public Health Communication Officer Christopher Pollesel (PAUL -AH-SELL) explains carfentanil is an opioid used by veterinarians for large animals and is 100 times stronger than fentanyl

Pollesel adds purple heroin also to be sold under the name "purple" or "purp" and is heroin mixed with fentanyl or carfentanil.
Symptoms of overdose include:
- blue lips or nails
- dizziness and confusion
- can not be awakened
- choking, gurgling or snoring
- slow, weak, or nil
- sleepiness or difficulty staying awake

- Use with other people but not at the same time . Never use drugs alone
- Start with lower amounts than usual
- Overdose occurs quickly
- Call 911 if you think the person is overdosed.
