Here is a brief inventory of Tesla CEO Elon Musk's comments this week on model 3 at the third quarter earnings conference call on October 24th.
All that Musk has to say about Model 3 has a new meaning in light of the FBI's investigation, as reported on Friday the Wall Street Journal (Forbes story here).
Musk Introductory Remarks: Model 3 is the best-selling sedan in the United States. (via the Tesla webcast *).
We delivered a total of 84,000 vehicles worldwide, more than 80% of the vehicles we delivered in 2017. In fact, we delivered more cars during this quarter than for the whole of 2016 in a single quarter.
The Model 3 became the best-selling car in the United States in terms of revenue and the fifth-best-selling car in terms of volume … and achieved a gross margin of over 20% for the Model 3 … and Model 3a – Security Rating in each category and sub-category ….
And we are excited to introduce Model 3 in Europe and China early next year, as the mid-size premium sedan market in these regions is even larger than in North America.
Musk on the model 3 to 35 000 $:
And since we simply do not have the ability to immediately access the car at $ 35,000, we thought this could be a way to offer it as an intermediate step. [mid-range model]. And that's really it. We plan to start producing a significant volume for Europe in January … We may or may not deliver cars to Asia-Pacific. [Asia Pacific] in Q1, but certainly in Q2.
It is as if we could produce the $ 35,000 car today, we would do it. There is still a long way to go before we can build a $ 35,000 car and have a positive gross margin. We are probably in less than six months, but that is our mission.
Musk's global demand model 3 compared to the BMW 3 Series:
What is the likely global demand for Model 3? This probably represents between 500,000 and one million cars a year.
If we speak … the [BMW] 3 series, which represents about half a million a year in the world. And in general, we find that we surpbad the BMW 3 Series quite well.
Musk on the production model 3 overseas:
We will definitely make local production in China … certainly next year. But this will be done very profitably in capital, much more like the way we proceeded to the general badembly line 4 compared to the general badembly line 3. We will also have a factory in Europe in the long run as it is pretty ridiculous to make cars in California and ship them to Europe.
I'm not talking about S and X. I'm only talking about 3. So S and X will continue to be made in California. I probably think exclusively here.
Weekly production rate of Musk on model 3:
We can do 7,000 a week … so it gets a bit harder if you start to exceed 7,000. We would need [to] put the lines at Fremont for significant improvements to reach 10K.
In the long run, it's a kind of 7,000 to 10,000 Fremont model 3 cars, and then, I do not know, 5,000 to 8,000 in the rest of the world, something like that It's a guess.
What types of cars are traded (Martin Viecha and Musk Tesla):

I therefore badyzed all the exchanges we received. And the only model I've seen is that, overall, most brands are non-premium brands. I think that's the number one message, it's a little over half of the exchanges we received cost less than $ 35,000 originally.

"The only thing that has to change between a car produced today and a car produced in the second quarter of next year is the exchange of the autopilot computer. change that takes less than half an hour of computer upgrade service ".
Elon Musk in full driving: "So, anybody will be able to upgrade their computer so that it is totally autonomous or make their vehicle more autonomous thanks to a simple maintenance visit.
"But … we took [full self driving] off the control menu, just because … it really created a lot of friction in the sales process and people did not understand the difference between the improved autopilot and the complete autonomous driving. So, to simplify the ordering process, we removed it. But whoever asks for it can certainly get it. "
