GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Florida – A human case of West Nile virus has been confirmed in Green Cove Springs and Nbadau County, the Florida Department of Health said Friday. This is the third case in Nbadau and the first in Clay.

Nbadau County remains under alert for mosquito-borne diseases.

There is growing concern that other residents will become ill in Clay County.

Clay County Mosquito Control and DOH-Clay continue their surveillance and prevention efforts, the DOH said.

Below you will find a list of "drainage and coverage" measures that you can follow at home:

  • Empty water from garbage cans, domestic gutters, buckets, pool covers, coolers, toys, flowerpots or any other container containing rainwater or sprinklers
  • Discard old tires, drums, bottles, cans, pots, pans, broken appliances and other items that you do not currently use.
  • Empty and clean the bird baths and water bowls of your animals at least once or twice a week
  • Protect boats and vehicles from rain with tarpaulins that do not collect water
  • Maintain the pools and monitor their chlorine level.
  • Cover the surface of your skin by wearing shoes, socks, long pants and long sleeves when you go out
  • Apply an insect repellent to your clothes and exposed skin. Look for repellents with DEET, picardin, lemon oil and eucalyptus because they are more effective.
  • Protect children under two months by covering them with a mosquito net when they go out.
