In the online world, shopping malls seem to be a thing of the past

But owners of one of the largest shopping centers in the Maritimes are banking on its future and plan to spend $ 55 million to remake Mic Mac Mall.

When more people shop online, one might think that the bricks and mortar of a mall would be destroyed rather than polished.

But Mic Mac Mall does not think and has already undertaken an ambitious update. 1965C002] "This is certainly the way shopping centers operate," said Jim Cormier, director of the Atlantic Retail Council of Canada.

Cormier says that research is under way behind this statement

. it will continue to grow, "said Cormier, but we are starting to see a reversal, in that people understand that there is really a good place for brick and mortar retailing. difference is however that you need to provide a retail experience. "

You need something that would make people farther away from the computer – and walk in there. That's why the director of Mic Mac Mall says that the focus is on the common spaces.

"Replacement of escalators, floors, handrails, washrooms, a new nursing salon," said Tamitha Oakley, Executive Director of Mic Mac Mall. "We will also replace the common areas of the food court with new seats and new lighting."

Some of the seats in the food court date back to the eighties. And the sign of the court of food? This is an original dating back to the construction of the mall in the 1970s.

Three maritime shopping centers claim to be the largest shopping centers in the Atlantic region: Mic Mac Mall, commercial center of Halifax and Champlain Place in Dieppe. But according to what really matters, it's the number of people who walk through the door.

According to a 2017 study by the Retail Council of Canada, Mic Mac Mall attracts about five million visitors each year, Champlain Place has eight million, and the Halifax Mall has 10 million.

The goal of the renovations at Mic Mall Mall is to "maintain" and "enhance the competitive position of the mall"

. opened during the renovation and most of the major work should be completed by the end of 2019

The finishing work will be done in 2020.

Oakley says all the work has been outsourced locally and that there will be four stores added after completion of renovations
