HALIFAX – Nova Scotia NDP veteran Dave Wilson resigns from his position as MP for Sackville Cobequid after 15 years in the provincial legislature.

In a press release, the party says Wilson's decision to leave "will allow him to pursue new job opportunities and spend more time with his family."

A former paramedic, Wilson was first elected in 2003 and served as minister in several portfolios, including communities, culture and heritage; health; and Acadian Affairs under the former NDP government under former Prime Minister Darrell Dexter.

Since 2015, he is the NDP House Leader.

NDP Leader Gary Burrill says he has "all the admiration of the world" for what Wilson did during his tenure in the legislature.

Progressive Conservative Party leader Tim Houston said Wilson had distinguished himself as a public servant "whose priority was always the people he served."

"It has been an incredible journey, but in recent months I have envisioned a life beyond politics," Wilson said. "After 15 years, it's time to start a new chapter and allow the people of Sackville Cobequid to elect a new representative."
