HALIFAX – Tens of thousands of people in the Maritimes are without electricity this morning after the area has been hit by high winds and heavy rains.
New Brunswick was the hardest hit, with NB Power reporting that more than 94,000 customers are in the dark after the 100 km / h winds swept through the province on Saturday and today.
Wind warnings had been issued Saturday and Environment Canada said some areas of the province could also expect 15 millimeters of rain.
Nova Scotia, where wind and rain warnings were also posted, was struck with similar force bursts during the night and into the morning on the Fundy coast and in northern Cape Breton.
Nova Scotia Power reported this morning that more than 18,000 of its customers were waiting to be reconnected.
All of Prince Edward Island was under a wind warning on Saturday and this morning, more than 3,000 Maritime Electric customers were without electricity.
