The Toronto Board of Health must decide today when it will ask the federal government to decriminalize all drugs for personal use.
The Toronto Medical Officer of Health will present to the council a report inviting the city to call the government should treat drug use as a public health problem rather than a criminal one.
Villa Eileen's report recommends that the board of health ask the federal government to "decriminalize the possession of all drugs for personal use, and to increase prevention, harm reduction services. and treatment ".

De Villa says the report was triggered by the persistent problem of opioids that swept the country.
In 2017, 303 overdose deaths from opioids were reported in Toronto. the report shows a 63 percent increase over the previous year.
Health Canada says the government is not currently trying to decriminalize or legalize all drugs.
