Workers on strike at Goderich salt mine remove blockade before week 11

Workers facing strike at salt mine in Goderich, Ont., At a court order, claim to have struck down blockade of wooden pallets to prevent replacement workers from entering mine

. Scott Doherty says that they still have no intention of letting replacement workers come in.

"We have set up a picket line and we have no intention of allowing vehicles carrying replacement workers to the site," he said.

According to Unifor Local 16-0 President Gary Lynch, about 15 tractors joined the road soon after the removal of the roadblocks.

Last week, the Ontario Superior Court issued an order directing strikers to lift their blockade before 4:30 pm Saturday, according to an article on Compbad Minerals Trading Site

Compbad Minerals, the company that operates the mine, says the blockade was putting the safety of workers, contractors and customers at risk.

Lynch says that he came home from the blockade of taking a nap, and that when he came back around 6 pm, the tractors had arrived.

About 350 miners represented by Unifor Local 16-0 have been on strike since April 27. The mine, one of the largest of world, remained open thanks to the use of replacement workers.

Following a phone call from July 4 between Unifor and Compbad Minerals, Doherty said the two sides could resume negotiations this week.

Compbad Minerals did not respond to a request for further comments on Sunday.
